This is a family of herbaceous or shrubby plants with thin and climbing branches. Their appearance is very unusual and they are, in fact, used as ornamental plants. Within this family, the Dioscorea Elephantipes and Macrostachya are famous. They are similar for their elephant’s pawn shape and their bark very close to the Tortoise shell, but at the same time different for origin and rest periods. The
Elephantipes come Madagascar and rests in summer, whereas the Macrostachya comes from Mexico and rests in winter.
